There is little effort to preserve history in CD5, which includes the fastest growing county in the entire country, Kaufman. There is some preservation in the cities of Garland & Mesquite of Dallas County, with Kaufman counties city of Forney also having some effort- all by locals. I think its important to protect history while building a bridge between the past and future in thoughtful ways that include the communities, before it’s too late and progress bulldozes leaving disconnection. I would like to see preservation of history in terms of the way of life (rodeo’s for example), original town formations as well as historical events & significance, including freedmen’s towns in CD5.

Historic preservation is crucial in Texas District 6, encompassing Tarrant, Ellis, and Navarro counties, where historic sites reflect the area’s diverse heritage and contribute to local identity, tourism, and economic development. Notable sites include the Ellis County Courthouse in Waxahachie and the historic downtown areas of Waxahachie and Corsicana, which showcase Victorian architecture and early 20th-century oil boom history, attracting visitors and boosting local pride.

A significant part of our district’s heritage includes the Freedman’s Colonies, such as Mosier Valley in Fort Worth and Bear Creek in Irving, some of the oldest Black settlements in Texas established by formerly enslaved people after the Civil War. These communities represent resilience and the fight for independence, and preserving them honors the legacy of freedom and equality that defines our nation’s history.

Engaging in historic preservation efforts ensures these stories are not lost, fostering education, community pride, and a deeper connection to our district’s diverse past.

Historic preservation plays a vital role in my district, as it reflects our deep connection to the past and shapes our community’s identity. Fort Worth’s rich history is evident in many places, but Heritage Park stands out as an important landmark. Located on the bluff north of the Tarrant County Courthouse, Heritage Park commemorates the military outpost from which our city grew, reminding us of our roots and the journey our community has taken.

Heritage Park is not only a historic site but also a space where my constituents and I can reflect on our shared history. The park’s creation was a collaborative effort between public and private organizations, showcasing the community’s commitment to preserving Fort Worth’s heritage.

While the park faced challenges due to under-utilization and deferred maintenance, efforts to rehabilitate it, including its listing on the National Register of Historic Places, demonstrate the importance of safeguarding our historical spaces. Heritage Park serves as a symbol of resilience, and its preservation is essential to maintaining a sense of place for future generations in Fort Worth.
