I was part of the driving force behind the African American Burial Grounds Preservation Act of 2023, which established the African American Burial Grounds Preservation Program. I understand the importance of preserving these sacred grounds. We had a situation in my district where there was a company wanting to build a small golf area. The community was very concerned because, as they began to build it, they discovered an African American cemetery. They worked out an agreement where they had to stop the project and find another place to do it.

I believe that historic preservation plays an important role in every district. I am proud of the history of Brooklyn Village and West End in Charlotte as well as the numerous revolutionary war sites.
