Does historic preservation play an important role in your state/district? How so? Describe any personal connections to historic preservation or historic sites. Is there a specific historic place in your district that is important to you and your constituents?
New Mexico has a rich history, from the seven sovereign nations that I represent to its acquisition by the United States as part of the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Historic preservation officers have helped protect our state’s history and worked with municipalities and tribal nations to ensure that sites are protected and preserved even as infrastructure projects are build around them. As an avid conservationist, I have spent my life enjoying our state’s history from petroglyphs to our colonials in the southern part of our community.

Historic preservation is incredibly important to New Mexicans, and I have been involved in this work since long before I served in Congress. As an attorney working on behalf of indigenous tribes and nations, I worked to preserve cultural sites across New Mexico, and following my appointment by President Obama, I served as Vice Chair of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, and worked on preservation issues across the country. New Mexicans have a long, proud, and diverse history, and we value the preservation and celebration of all parts of our story. From the Pueblo of Taos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to the Cathedral of St. Francis of Assissi in Santa Fe, which contains both Christian and Jewish iconography, we are proud of the many beautiful places across our state that tell the overlapping pieces of New Mexico’s story.
