My District is home to several important historic buildings and I’m proud of my work in Congress alongside local governments and community groups to help preserve these pieces of Las Vegas and Nevada history. Most notably the Hoover Dam was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1981 and represents a key piece of history in Southern Nevada that I’ve continued to help preserve for future generations. It was built during the Great Depression between 1931 and 1936 by thousands of workers who lived around what is now Boulder City. Some of their homes have been preserved and are still standing today. In Las Vegas itself, my office has worked with community groups and local governments to preserve several historically significant locations. We’ve worked with the Clark County Museum to preserve historic railroad cottages built between 1905 and 1911. The Huntridge Theater, built in 1944, is currently being restored to its former glory. The historic Fifth Street School in downtown Las Vegas is now a cultural events center for our community. The original Las Vegas High School which is an example of the best art-deco architecture of the 1930s is now a landmark in the city. I will always work to preserve our historic buildings in Las Vegas even as we grow.

In the Senate, I have worked to protect and preserve Nevada’s unique history, support our state’s cultural heritage, and advocate for our Tribal communities. I have requested community project funding for historic preservation projects in Nevada, secured funding through the appropriations process for various historic buildings throughout the state, helped secure over $1.8 million in historic preservation grant funding for Nevada cultural and Tribal sites, passed legislation to protect public lands in Nevada and across the country, and have been a strong supporter of defending and expanding our National Monuments across Nevada, many of which have notable significance to local Tribes. I am proud to have protected historical properties and cultural traditions in our state.
