St Louis City and St Louis County are home to an innumerable amount of historic sites. Historical preservation is critical in keeping the story of Missouri’s First District alive.

It’s a sound use of tax policy to incentivize developers to preserve our historic treasures.

I have played a leading role for more than 40 years as a journalist in fighting to preserve historic treasures in the St. Louis region. Our area is especially blessed with an exceptional amount of historic buildings and as a Congressman for Missouri’s 2nd District, I’ll make a priority of growing the Historic Preservation Fund, no merely reauthorizing it.

I appreciate the work of the Historic Preservation Fund, particularly the emphasis on tribal lands and historically disadvantaged communities. When I am in Congress, I will support expanded funding to this program.

I would support efforts to modernize and enhance the HTC program, especially making sure that the funding keeps up with inflation and the increased cost of construction. I like the focus on rehabilitating rural buildings, since our rural communities often
Do you support the Federal Historic Preservation Easement program?

Yes, I think that providing builders or remodelers with the option to charitably tax-deduct work as a contribution enhances community outreach and incentivizes community participation to preserve history.

Historic preservation plays an important role in many of my counties. They are a great way to generate revenue and preserve our history. St. Charles County enjoys tourism and tax money from historic Old St. Charles Main Street. It’s a sought-after destination for antique shoppers and small business owners who enjoy robust traffic, especially during special community events. Boone County has several historical sites like Maplewood and the historic Boone County Courthouse. Fulton, MO hosts a lot of great events in its Brick District. I am always excited to learn about historical sites in my district, so please reach out if you know of one that I should visit!

Too many rural communities do not have adequate funding, whether due to lack of sales tax revenue because of competition with online sales or big box stores in the next town over, to preserve historic sites. Reauthorizing and increasing the HPF would allow for small towns to make much needed improvements that might then also draw visitors and help support their local economy.

Many rural communities who have historic sites are not equipped financially to adequately preserve historic sites. Programs like the HTC would help keep our history alive.

The damming of the White River and the construction of I-44 left many small communities behind, communities rich in American history. We owe those small towns assistance in preserving our heritage.

Living in Forsyth, the county seat of Taney County, I see how we are rich in cultural heritage insofar as Forsyth having been a major trade center on the White River at one point. Forsyth played a part in the Civil War, when Confederates took use of the courthouse here as headquarters until Union troops ran them off. There is an old jail down by what is now Shadowrock Park – where town was before it was moved up the hill ahead of putting dams on the White River. That old jail needs assistance in being restored, as not only would that preserve some of our heritage but also help revitalize our community. This is just one example of history in SWMO. If organizations like the Historic Preservation Fund are not aided in helping to hold on to our history so that new generations can view and experience these primary sources, we lose some of the ability to learn from our past.
