Historic preservation is deeply important in Mississippi, where our rich history and cultural heritage are woven into the fabric of our communities. From the civil rights movement to the legacy of blues music, preserving our historic sites ensures that future generations understand and appreciate the struggles, triumphs, and contributions of those who came before us.
As a native of Rolling Fork, Mississippi, I have a personal connection to our state’s history. Rolling Fork is a small town in the Mississippi Delta, an area that holds significant historical value, from the cotton fields that shaped our economy to the communities that were instrumental in the civil rights movement. Protecting these sites is not just about preserving buildings; it’s about honoring the stories and sacrifices that define who we are as a state.
One specific historic site that stands out to me is the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum in Jackson. This museum tells the story of the civil rights struggle in our state, a struggle that has impacted the lives of so many Mississippians. It’s a place of reflection, education, and inspiration, and it serves as a reminder of the importance of justice, equality, and perseverance.
In addition to the Civil Rights Museum, many historic sites across Mississippi—such as Medgar Evers’ home in Jackson and the historic town of Natchez—are vital to our collective memory. These places connect us to our past and provide context for our present and future.
As a U.S. Senator, I would support efforts to preserve our state’s historic sites because they are not only a source of pride but also a tool for education and unity. By preserving these landmarks, we ensure that the lessons of the past continue to inform and inspire future generations.
