Preserving historic sites not only honors the past but also contributes to community identity, tourism, and local economies. Niles, MI is home to Fort St. Joseph, one of the earliest European settlements in the western Great Lakes region.

Historic preservation is personal for me…. I own a mid-1800’s homestead and have personally encountered issues qualifying for state and federal assistance to restore/rehabilitate it. I would advocate for the improving the funding model to ensure further success.

Existing state laws in Michigan are very prescriptive and severely limit applicants to apply and/or be considered. Beyond my mid-1800’s homestead, the 6th district has a plethora of both urban and rural historic places/structures that could benefit from improved policies.
