I believe in being a good steward of the American history that exists all around the 1st District in GA.  In particular, this area contains some of the most important artifacts and communities of the African American experience in America.

Georgia’s District 01 is home to some of the most important African American history found in this country.  This includes the only existing community of the Gullah Geechee people in Georgia.  In addition, there are many slave graveyards, black schools, and black churches criss-crossing this area.  Finally, in Savannah is The Weeping Time site, where the largest sale of black slaves in the United States was held.  These are the artifacts of the history of slavery in America and as such, must be preserved for future generations.

I’m from the oldest historic Resort in the United States which is Cape May New Jersey. I have a strong background in historic renovation as I have a construction background and studied historic renovation. I used to do projects in Charleston that the bar often approved. Thank you for all your efforts to conserve historic properties

The First Governor’s Mansion located in my district is of extreme historical value to my constituents. It stands as a pillar of Georgia’s foundation. It captures the complexities of the formation of Georgia’s government. Today it stands as a museum after intensive restoration from 2001 to 2005. There are many other essential landmarks like this in District 8 that mark the formative years of government in Georgia.

Absolutely!  Of course here in Athens, GA where I live we have beautiful historic structures from campus to downtown that stretch back to the 1800’s and throughout the state as well in Savannah, Augusta, etc.  and without historic preservation organizations at play these structures would take a real beating from construction and corporate backed companies.

This work may be needed now more than ever before.  With the limitations put on many public schools about what they can and cannot teach – projects funded by the HPF are a way to hold on to our true cultural history, giving people a way to learn more about our country.  These are locations and events that shaped America and provide insight into how we arrived at our current place in history.

This is an area where we need more public-private partnerships. It needs to be incentivized across the board. These rehabilitation projects require specialized trade skills that provide jobs and fuel local economies.

Do you support the Federal Historic Preservation Easement program?

Yes

We need to ensure that all federal programs are easily accessible.  Rural communities may not be considered as important as they have smaller and older communities but those are exactly the areas where history was made and it needs to be preserved appropriately. These easements will also open the door to more minority and tribal projects.

Historic Preservation Protections:

We need every voice at the table. We shouldn’t risk making any community suffer the consequences of collateral damage from a project simply because we didn’t listen. Leaders listen and leadership matters.

Historic preservation is not something I hear much about as I travel my district but it might because history is a part of our daily life.  NW Georgia is home to Lookout Mountain,  Fort Oglethorpe and the Rosenwald School.  The Trail of Tears passed through as well.
