Historic preservation is incredibly important to me and an issue that I hope to continue to champion. My district covers historically significant areas across four different counties that are being threatened by overdevelopment. Two years ago, I helped support an initiative in my hometown of Mount Dora, Florida to prevent commercialization and overdevelopment of our downtown area. When local politicians expressed support of adding developments to the small, historic downtown area, a citizen led amendment was added to our city charter to prevent construction of buildings over 35 feet within the historic downtown.

Why should we care about the Historic Preservation Fund? Because it’s not just about old buildings; it’s about preserving our heritage, our stories, and our identity. Every dollar invested in preservation is a dollar spent on education, tourism, and community pride. It’s time we recognize that safeguarding our past isn’t just good for the soul, it’s smart for the economy. Let’s fund our history, not forget it.

The Historic Tax Credit Program isn’t just about saving old buildings; it’s about revitalizing our communities, creating jobs, and boosting local economies.  Every historic rehab project means more jobs for Americans, more tax revenue, and a richer cultur

Do you support the Federal Historic Preservation Easement program?

Yes

The Historic Preservation Easement Program isn’t just about protecting old buildings; it’s about safeguarding our community’s soul, our history, and our future.  By placing easements, we’re not just preserving structures; we’re ensuring that our children and grandchildren inherit a piece of our past that tells our story. This program is vital for economic revitalization, tourism, and maintaining the unique character of our neighborhoods. Let’s champion preservation not just for the sake of history, but for the prosperity it brings to our community.

The synergy between Historic Preservation and Federal Project Planning in our district. These aren’t just buzzwords; they’re the backbone of sustainable development and community identity.  By weaving historic preservation into our federal projects, we’re not just honoring our past; we’re investing in our future. This approach doesn’t just create jobs or boost tourism; it fosters a sense of place, a pride in our community that’s invaluable. It’s time we view our history not as a hurdle but as a cornerstone for economic and cultural growth. Let’s ensure that every federal project respects and integrates our heritage, making Tampa Bay a model for smart, respectful growth.

Does historic preservation play an important role in your state/district? How so? Describe any personal connections to historic preservation or historic sites. Is there a specific historic place in your district that is important to you and your constituents?

Historic preservation isn’t just about old buildings; it’s the heartbeat of our community’s identity, our story, and our future. In FL-14, it’s not just important; it’s essential.

Every preserved site, from the forts of Fort De Soto to the cultural richness of Ybor City, tells a tale of resilience, innovation, and community spirit. These places aren’t just landmarks; they’re living classrooms where our children learn about the struggles and triumphs that shaped Tampa Bay.

Personally, I’ve walked through the historic districts with my family, my son’s eyes lighting up at the stories of pirates, pioneers, and progress. It’s these moments that remind me why preservation matters—it’s about passing down our heritage, not just in books, but in bricks and mortar.

And let’s talk about the economic angle. Preservation drives tourism, creates jobs, and revitalizes neighborhoods. It’s smart growth, where history pays dividends in community pride and economic prosperity.

The Fort De Soto Park? That’s not just a place for picnics; it’s a testament to our military history, a natural wonder, and a hub for community activities. It’s where history meets the present, offering a space for everyone to connect with our past.

So, when we talk about historic preservation in FL-14, we’re talking about preserving our soul, our economy, and our future. Let’s keep our history alive, not just for us, but for generations to come.

As a long-time charity supporter and consultant, this program would be of tremendous importance in incentivizing building owners and permanently protecting and rehabilitating historic buildings.  My Public-Private-Philanthropic Partnership initiative might be of help in making that happen faster.

As a statewide candidate, there are many specific historic locations of importance to me and the constituents I would represent.  I have worked on two national memorial efforts that were funded with public as well as private and charitable dollars and that had great national historic significance.  I am not one to have to be convinced to give you my active support.
