As one of the oldest states in the country, Connecticut is home to many historic sites which play a key role in our state. With over 1,500 sites included on the National Register of Historic Places throughout the state, my district is home to Hearthstone Castle and Meeker’s Hardware in Danbury, the New York Belting and Packing Company in Newtown and Seth Seelye House in Bethel, to name a few. Historic preservation is an important component of American history and I remain committed to funding the programs that make this possible.

Do you support stable and robust funding for the Historic Preservation Fund?

Yes

Would you support efforts to reauthorize and increase the Historic Preservation Fund?

Yes

The Historic Preservation Fund (HPF) is an essential tool for preserving our nation’s cultural heritage, providing critical funding for projects that rehabilitate historic properties, support the National Register of Historic Places, and administer grants for underrepresented communities. Since its creation in 1976, the HPF has not used taxpayer dollars but instead relies on revenue from offshore oil and gas leases. Given its wide-ranging benefits for both economic growth and heritage preservation, reauthorizing and increasing the HPF is crucial to maintaining its impact on community revitalization.

Federal Historic Preservation Tax Incentives:

Would you support efforts to modernize and enhance the Federal Rehabilitation Tax Credit (HTC) program?

Yes

Yes, I would support efforts to modernize and enhance the Federal Rehabilitation Tax Credit (HTC) program. Given its proven track record of revitalizing historic properties and stimulating economic growth, it’s essential to restore the value of the credit

Do you support the Federal Historic Preservation Easement program?

Yes

Yes, I support the Federal Historic Preservation Easement program. This program plays a vital role in protecting our historic buildings by incentivizing property owners to preserve these important sites through charitable tax deductions. By offering these easements, we ensure that historically significant properties are safeguarded for future generations while encouraging private investment in their rehabilitation. Strengthening this program is crucial to maintaining our nation’s cultural heritage.

Historic Preservation Protections:

Would you support policies that ensure that the impact on historic and cultural resources continue to be considered as part of the federal project planning process?

Yes

Yes, I fully support policies that ensure historic and cultural resources are considered as part of the federal project planning process. It is critical that federal infrastructure projects undergo thorough reviews, as outlined by Section 106, to protect and mitigate the impact on these important sites. Maintaining the integrity of our nation’s cultural heritage, while balancing development, is essential, and I will advocate for continued involvement of SHPO and THPO staff in these processes.

Yes, historic preservation plays an important role in my state and district, helping to maintain our rich cultural heritage while driving economic growth and tourism. Connecticut, home to many historic towns, landmarks, and buildings, benefits from preservation efforts that enhance community pride and ensure these places are passed on to future generations. A personal favorite is the town of Simsbury, known for its beautiful historic districts and landmarks that resonate with the community’s identity and contribute significantly to local history and revitalization efforts.
