Responsibilities of State Coordinators

The following is a summary of the goals and responsibilities of Preservation Action State Coordinators:


Preservation Action will have a number of board members and many members in each state. Some will be very active, some will not. Some will be willing to travel to Washington, DC for Advocacy Week, while others may prefer to write letters, make phone calls, or undertake in-district lobbying.


The State Coordinator will serve to identify Preservation Action members by congressional district, access their willingness and ability to lobby, and organize their federal lobbying efforts. We want to ensure that each state is regularly in communication with their Senators and Congressman and that their lobbying efforts are well-conceived and as effective as possible.


State Coordinators would be recruited from Preservation Action’s Board of Directors to organize and encourage lobbying from Preservation Action members in their state. The role of the State Coordinator will in many cases be done in conjunction with the preservation statewide organization.

Responsibility of the Coordinators, with assistance by Preservation Action Staff and Board:


The Coordinator will set up an e-mail distribution list made up of Preservation Action members in their state. They will make themselves available as a resource to these members and communicate with them somewhat regularly. As new members join they will reach out to them, and add them to the e-mail list.


The Coordinator, with assistance from the staff, will figure out what Congressional districts are represented by Preservation Action members. They will then develop a plan to find members in districts where there are none, giving priority to recruiting members in districts with key legislators.


He or she will work with other board members in their state to encourage and assist members to act upon lobby alerts and be available to answer questions and/or help the member tailor visits, calls, and letters to reflect state and district concerns.


The Coordinator will work with members to determine how they would like to participate and then develop a lobbying schedule that makes sense for that state.


When possible State Coordinators will recruit members to hold events, provide tours, or in other ways build relationships with members of Congress.

Coordinator Benefits

The State Coordinator would have a clearly defined and important role to play in Preservation Action’s advocacy efforts. He or she would have a chance to build strong relationships with their colleagues in the state and they would gain hands-on, real world experience in cutting edge advocacy techniques and strategies. In addition, they would be building a strong, experienced, and effect lobbying network in their state whose efforts could also be directed toward state level advocacy for tax credits, preservation funding, and other incentives.

How You’re Helping Preservation Action

Preservation Action will have put in place a far more targeted and effective lobbying approach. It will be growing a sophisticated and reliable team of advocates. It will be able to define and offer a clear role for members to plan in our advocacy. The State Coordinator will also help ensure that information from the grassroots flows up through the organization.
